Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp has launched a new privacy feature designed to give users more control over how they manage their contacts. With this update, users can now choose whether to store contacts directly within WhatsApp or sync them with their phone’s address book, offering a more flexible and seamless contact management experience.

    Enhanced User Control Over Contacts

The feature, accessible via WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Contacts > WhatsApp Contacts, allows users to manage contact storage across multiple devices. This update also lets users seamlessly add and edit contacts from any device linked to their WhatsApp account, making the process more efficient.

One of the standout additions is a new toggle called “Sync contact to phone” that appears whenever a new contact is added. This option enables users to choose whether to sync the contact with their phone’s general contact list or keep it exclusively within WhatsApp. Contacts saved exclusively to WhatsApp will not appear in the phone’s general address book, giving users greater privacy and control.

Introduction of Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS)

In addition to flexible contact management, WhatsApp has introduced a secure storage system called Identity Proof Linked Storage (IPLS). This system ensures that contact information is safely stored and can be restored even if a user loses their phone. IPLS utilizes Key Transparency, which allows users to verify the authenticity of their contacts and track any changes made to identity keys. This added layer of security aims to enhance user trust in the platform.

    Security Enhancements Through Cloudflare Partnership

To further safeguard user data, WhatsApp has partnered with internet security company Cloudflare, which provides independent verification to ensure that contact data is not tampered with. This collaboration enhances the app’s security framework, offering users peace of mind regarding the integrity of their contact information. Additionally, WhatsApp employs cryptographic hashes to protect the phone numbers of contacts who do not have WhatsApp accounts, ensuring these details are not stored on the company’s servers.

    Automatic Restoration of Contacts

Contacts stored exclusively in WhatsApp will also be automatically restored when users reinstall the app, switch to a new phone, or link a new device. This functionality ensures a smooth transition between devices without the risk of losing important contact information, further enhancing the user experience.

    Conclusion

WhatsApp’s new contact management feature represents a significant advancement in user privacy and data management. By allowing users to choose how their contacts are stored, the platform not only enhances user control but also strengthens security through innovative storage solutions like IPLS and strategic partnerships. As this feature rolls out to users worldwide, WhatsApp continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing a secure and user-friendly messaging experience.
